Creative Ways to Serve Gefilte Fish

Being that Gefilte fish has become a staple in many of our homes and is served at almost every Shabbos and Yom Tov meal, I decided to share three original ways to serve this special dish of fish!!

Pinwheel Fish

When I was younger, I remember being so impressed watching my mother cut fruits with a V  knife. This cool knife easily creates a large zig-zag design. Using this knife to cut your Gefilte fish is an easy and  creative way to serve the fish.

You will need:

  • Loaf of gefilte fish and carrots, cooked
  • V  knife
  • 2 tasting spoons
  • Horseradish ,mayonnaise
  • Lemon slices, lettuce
Directions:
  1. Fill tasting spoons with chrein and mayonnaise-place on plate.
  2. Cut a thick slice of fish.
  3. Using the v knife, cut the slice of fish in half. Place carrots on top.
  4. Use the lettuce and lemon slices to garnish plate.

Gefilte Fish Balls

You will need:

  •  Home  made gefilte fish batter or a frozen loaf of store bought fish defrosted
  • Large carrots-sliced
  • Large skewers

Directions:

  1. Place fish batter in the bowl of your mixer.
  2. Beat on high for 15 minutes (this will make the mixture firm).
  3. Refrigerate batter overnight.
  4. Prepare the pot for cooking the way you normally cook your fish. (water, onion, carrot sugar ,salt, pepper…)
  5. Roll fish into balls or oval shape(I used a small scoop to keep balls even).
  6. Place the balls into the boiling water. Do not overcrowd the pot.
  7. Cook fish for 1 hour on medium flame. Allow to cool-refrigerate.

Fish Kabobs

You will need:

  • Fish balls, carrot slices
  • Fresh parsley
  • Dill dip
  • Squeeze bottle
  • Wooden skewers
  • Diced colored peppers

Directions:

  1. Place fish balls and carrots on skewer, place on plate and garnish with parsley.
  2. Place dill dip in squeeze bottle and decorate plate-garnish with diced peppers.

     Fish in a Glass

I love serving in a Martini glass. It's an easy way to make anything look elegant and gourmet with little effort. I use them to serve all sorts of desserts, salads, candy, nuts, chocolates ....so I figured why not try Gefilte fish.

    You will need:

    • Fish balls, sliced carrots
    • Large raw carrots-peeled
    • English cucumbers-unpeeled
    • Julliene  peeler
    • Martini glass

Using your julienne peeler , peel carrot and cucumbers into long strips. Place strips in martini glass and place fish on top. Place carrot slices on top of fish.
